Laser Freezer Series – Races 3 and 4

Tracey triumphs in two turns!

By Patrick Cooney – 07/11/2023

A damp squib of a Saturday morning was transformed into a glamourous afternoon with a lively wind promising some fireworks for the second of the Freezer series B2B races. Unfortunately a safe and simple two buoy course was set in anticipation of blustery winds which only provided for a close fetch between B and D in place of a beat.

It was good to see the youth section braving the unpredictable conditions; Jos Glen and Alfie Craigie both demonstrating good seamanship and boat speed at times.

Newly elected Laser class captain Toby Tracey was suitably inspired by his impending appointment, winning both races in reasonably comfortable fashion, capitalising on two impressive starts. A straightforward course led to a processional race and anybody showing pace over the start line had a good chance of finishing in the chocolates, as opportunities for overtaking were few and far between. One such eager beaver was Matt Leigh who blasted off gleefully in the second race to take the runner up spot behind Toby. The “Yellow Peril” held on to third spot after a concerted rearguard action from retiring captain John Ogden who deserves the gratitude of the class for his sterling efforts over the last few years.

Two more weekends to go, so come and join us for a final fling and you too could make the copy in the Hawkes/Cooney race report!
