Toppers at WSC
Raced by juniors and adults, WSC introduced Toppers as a new class in 2017. In the words of Lucy Rains, one of our junior Topper sailors: “Toppers are a very friendly class and I really like racing against my friends. We have lots of fun on and off the water. I’m looking forward to this year’s training and to there being more Saturday sailors. Wednesday evenings are really great too. I think I will really enjoy the Topper Open and I will learn a lot. I like sailing at WSC because there is a good mix of ability, lots of people ready to help me get better and the club is very sociable especially the Topper Christmas party.”
What’s on for Toppers in 2021?
Here’s a list of the main things. More details are in the Programme and information is always well-communicated before each event.
- Saturday Afternoon Racing
Every week from Saturday 13th March 2021 until the season ends in November. There are usually two races sailed either back to back or with a break for lunch in between. Toppers go off in the “K start” at 1326 hours for the first race. Usually a “committee boat start” somewhere up or down river of the club house. Members only.
- Saturday Morning Junior Sailing
Starts Saturday 24th April 2021 and there are 5 sessions with the content flexed depending on the sailors’ ability. More information including how to apply on the Junior Sailing page.
- Wednesday Evening Racing
Fast turning into the Club’s most popular racing, a one race evening starting Wednesday 21st April 2021 and continuing ’til the clocks change again in early September. Toppers go off in the “slow handicap fleet (K flag) at 1906 hours. The bar and galley are open for dinner and drinks. Members only.

- Club Regatta
Shore games, water games, dinghy racing, rowing, swimming, food and drink, music. Open to members and non-members. Always a winner and expect this, the club’s centenary year, to be extra special. 25th to 27th June 2021.
- Junior Week
Details to be confirmed. 16th to 20th August 2021.
- Topper End of Season (Xmas) Party
Who can resist the end of season party? Food, party games, prize giving and a super-quick AGM. Adults and children. Surely the best evening of the year?! Well it wasn’t in 2020 for the obvious reason so let’s hope we’re all partying again in 2021.
Are there Club Boats?
Yes, we have 2 fantastic club Toppers available for hire for a small charge (see WSC website here ). There are also plenty of members happy to take others out for a trial sail or loan their boats. However, the Club primarily relies on members to buy their own boats.
Is there any advice available for those buying a Topper?
In short, yes! Please take a look here. And if you join our WhatsApp you’ll have immediate access to lots of advice! There are usually boats available to buy from members already in the club.
Where can I store my Topper?
There are spaces both beach-side (be quick though, they go fast) and in the top car park.
How can I get involved?
If you would like to sail, race or arrange to try sailing a Topper please contact class captain Celia Mason at firstname.lastname@example.org. Don’t worry if you have no experience.
